It is an honour that Ham House is the sole house at Gayaza High School named after African figures of such great significance.

Sir Apollo Kaggwa, who served as the Katikkiro of Buganda from 1865 to 1927 under Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, played a pivotal role in the establishment of a girls’ school at Gayaza. His foresight and dedication to education led him to request the Church Missionary Society to open this institution, laying the foundation for generations of empowered young women.

Ham Mukasa, renowned as the Secretary to the Katikkiro of Buganda, made substantial contributions to the modernization of Uganda. Through his efforts in promoting modern education, health initiatives, agricultural advancements, and the spread of Christianity, he left an indelible mark on the development of the country.

Within the walls of Ham House, students proudly carry the title of “Hamites.” This name serves as a constant reminder of the inspiring legacies of Sir Apollo Kaggwa and Ham Mukasa, fueling a sense of pride and determination.
