Our Story
For over 120 years, GHS has molded girls who have been transforming Uganda and the world through their leadership, dedication to service, and pursuit of excellence.
Our Story
We are proud of our heritage. We believe the past liberates us, strengthening us to reimagine the future and situate ourselves firmly in the 21st century.
About Us
Everyone involved in GHS’s community agrees: it is a special place, with an ethos all of its own.
That is partly a result of the founding missionaries and setting. It is as if our story seeps from the golden stones of our buildings, giving our gils a profound sense that they are part of a living tradition.
We were the first girls school at a time then when a few schools existed for boys, girls only received religious instruction in Scripture and Catechism to prepare for baptism. European teachers were supported by African counterparts, and some girls, having excelled in both behavior and academics, were able to become teachers themselves despite lacking formal training.
But there is more to our distinctiveness than this. We are committed to providing an all-girls, boarding, education that is shaped for the twenty-first century. In this way, we create the time and space to nurture our girls’ dispositions and prepare them for the future.
